Night Market Resumes In Kaduna As Government Relaxes Curfew

Kaduna State Government on Wednesday told residents they are free to move around their environments to engage in their legitimate businesses except for hours between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am.

Kaduna was under an attack on Friday, October 9, that claimed the lives of over 50 persons. The attack prompted the State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to impose a 24-hour curfew on residents on two occasions.

Despite the curfew, the attacks still continued two days after the initial one. However, the government has assured residents of improved security and safety.

“The Kaduna State Government has relaxed the night-time curfew in Kaduna metropolis and metropolis with immediate effect,” El Rufai’s spokesman Samuel Aruwan said in a statement.

“Residents are henceforth free to move and pursue legitimate activities every day until the hours between 10 pm and 5 am.”

He said the government’s decision to relax the curfew was as a result of meeting with security agencies in the state to re-surge its night-time economy.

“This acknowledges welcome improvements in the overall situation and will also enable a resurgence of the night economy.”

However, the security agencies advised the government that the curfew is sustained in Kachia local government area from 5 pm to 6 am until further notice.

The state government also commended residents for complying and ensuring “growing atmosphere of calm and appealed for further efforts and unceasing vigilance in the cause of peace.”

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the state where he assured residents of improved security and urged them to ensure peace.
