Death From Abortion: Police Arrest Doctor, Nurse In Ogun
Ogun State Police Command on Sunday said it has arrested a medical practitioner identified as Dr. Olawale Raji and one of the nurses in his private hospital, Olusegun Funmilayo that carried out a Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) on a 35 year old woman which led to her death.
The police said they have declared war against medical practitioners who engage in carrying out abortion generally known as TOP without any justifiable reason for such.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu who gave the warning Sunday in Abeokuta, the state capital said whoever that is caught engaging in such practice “without any medical justification” for such will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
A statement issued Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspect, Dr. Olawale Raji and one of the nurses in his private hospital, identified as Olusegun Funmilayo had allegedly terminated an eight weeks old pregnancy for one Aminat Iyanda Atisola which led to her death.
Oyeyemi explained that their arrest followed a complaint lodged with the police at the Onipaanu Divisional headquarters, Ota area by the sister of the deceased, one Bose Kazeem.
“She reported that her deceased sister was two months pregnant and contracted the service of the two suspects who are working in a private hospital for the abortion of the pregnancy”.
PPRO in the statement further explained that the two suspects carried out the act inside the deceased’s house located located in Ireakari area of Atan-Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of the state.
“Trouble started when the deceased started having complications shortly after the abortion and she was rushed to the federal medical center Abeokuta for treatment but died on the way”.
Oyeyemi also explained that the suspects were immediately arrested last Thursday July 26th, while the corpse of the deceased has also been deposited at the general hospital morgue for post mortem examination.
Harping on the matter, Iliyasu emphasised that abortion remains an unlawful act and appealed to members of the public to always seek lawful professional advice on any health related issues rather than resolving to self help.
The CP has also ordered that the suspects be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for proper investigation and prosecution.
