3 Oyo Students Get Automatic Admission, Scholarship
Oyo State governor, Senator Isiaq Abiola Ajimobi, has announced automatic admission and scholarship of the Technical University [TU] for three students for their performances at the 2017 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination [SSSCE], conducted by the West African Examinations Council [WAEC].
Ajimobi, who disclosed this while speaking at the formal launch of the state’s N50 billion Education Trust in Ibadan, said that the three of them would receive the state largesse in the new university.
Two of the students, Akindele Oluwabusola from Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, and the best student in Oyo State in the last WASCE, and Irabor Isabella of Orita-Mefa Baptist High School, Ibadan, and the national best student in the examination, were publicly acknowledged and given awards.
It was announced that the second national best student in the same examination also came from Orita-Mefa Baptist High School, Ibadan.
The governor described the state ETF being launched as one of the pivotal policies of his administration, stressing that if the fund is well managed, it would restore the state back to her former glory as the nation’s intellectual base.
He explained that it had become outdated for the state alone to be saddled with the responsibility of funding education for her citizenry, because, ‘’there is not enough fund for that and the sector is too important to be left for government alone to fund’’.
Ajimobi equally disclosed that it would not be proper to deny members of the public to make input into government’s policies as critical stakeholders.
While stressing the importance of functional and qualitative education, which he said was the target of his administration for the state, the governor informed the gathering that the future of the country would not be determined by the quantum of available oil, but by quality education.
“The wealth of our future as a nation does not lie in the bowel of the earth, but, in the minds of our children, who are the future leaders. That is the reason why unprecedented steps to meet their needs must be taken since the available resources can’t meet the requirements needed,’’ he said.
