Security agencies in Kaduna State have arrested 22 suspects for allegedly vandalising and stealing solar powered street lights installed by the government.
Samuel Aruwan, the spokesman to Governor Nasir el-Rufai, who made the disclosure on Wednesday in Kaduna, said 19 out of the 22 suspects had been charged to court.
Aruwan reiterated the commitment of the government to prosecute anyone found vandalising or stealing public properties.
Aruwan said: “Security operatives have arrested 22 suspects for vandalizing and stealing of solar powered street lights.
“Among those arrested are scrap iron scavengers; others in the net are buyers of stolen properties within the metropolis.
“After careful combing of the crime scene, solar batteries and their covers and one iron saw were recovered inside the Cemetery along Bashama Road in Tudun Wada area of the metropolis.”
Aruwan said items recovered during the raid included solar panels, armoured cables, vehicle spare parts and textile materials suspected to have been stolen.
Aruwan said the suspects and the items recovered from them had been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the State Police Command for investigation and prosecution.
He warned vandals to desist from stealing and vandalising public properties, adding that the government would prosecute anyone caught in the act.
