14 Ondo Poly Students Remanded In Prison Custody Over Violent Protest
Fourteen students of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, said to have been involved in the violent protest that rocked the institution on Monday were on Wednesday remanded in prison custody
The students which includes, thirteen males and one female were arrested by police on Monday during protest that disrupted the on-going second-semester examinations in the institution.
They are ; Lukman Arowolo 21,Iyanuoluwa Gift 21, Olayinka Oyewole 21, Aladejebi Temitope 35, Oluwadare Gbenga 26,Japhet Samuel 21, Ayeni Samuel 24, Lawrence Monday 24,Titus Felix 22, Emmanuel Segun 23, Ayeni Temitope 21,Ayeni Trust 23, Olayinka Olalekan 17,and Ayomide Opeyemi 21.
The students were said to be protesting against the decision of the management of the institution to institute a “no school fees, no examinations” policy.
They were however brought before the Chief Magistrate Court -II sitting in the town, with Charge No: MOW/20C/2018 on a three- count charge of conspiracy, felony to wit stealing and malicious damage.
The Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Edu Owolabi told the court that, offences of the suspects are contrary and punishable under Sections 516, 390(9) and 451of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The students however pleaded not guilty to all the charges when it was read to them.
Ruling on the bail application, the presiding Magistrate, Mr. Sunday Adedapo said, he would deliver his ruling on it in the next adjournment date.
Adedapo adjourned the case till February 5th, 2018 for hearing on the bail application.
